What is the difference between a ground spotlight, uplight and spike spotlight?

The terms ground spotlight, uplight and spike spotlight are often used interchangeably. However, they do not mean exactly the same thing.

• A ground spotlight is a fixture installed in or close to the ground. This makes the light itself barely noticeable, and it can be used, for example, along a façade, driveway or garden path.
• An uplight mainly describes the direction of the light. With outdoor uplighting, the light shines upwards from a low position. This allows you to emphasise the height of a tree or give a façade a striking appearance. A ground spotlight can therefore be used as an uplight.
• A spike spotlight is installed in the soil using a ground spike. These spotlights are often adjustable and relatively easy to reposition. This makes a spike spotlight useful if you regularly change your lighting or if plants are still growing.

Which ground spotlight is right for your garden?

When choosing outdoor ground spotlights, light output is important. This is expressed in lumens. The higher the number of lumens, the more light a fixture produces. The final effect also depends on the beam angle, the distance to the object and the surroundings.

Agate: subtle lighting with 195 lumens

The Agate has a light output of 195 lumens and a light range of approximately 3 metres. This ground spotlight is suitable if you want to create a subtle lighting effect, for example along a driveway or near a smaller feature in the garden.

The Agate has a black finish with a stainless steel ring. The model has an IP67 rating, making the fixture dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. Looking for a compact option that does not draw too much attention? Then this model is a good choice.

Nomia: more light with 344 lumens

The Nomia has a light output of 344 lumens and a light range of approximately 3.5 metres. This ground spotlight therefore provides more light than the Agate. The model is a good option if you want to highlight a larger area or if the object is positioned slightly further away from the spotlight. For example, a façade, a larger shrub or a tree where you want to illuminate a larger section of the trunk.

Atik R1: powerful lighting with 713 lumens

The Atik R1 has a light output of 713 lumens, making it the most powerful of these three ground spotlights. The Atik R1 is suitable if you want to illuminate a larger object or create a stronger lighting accent.

An important advantage is the adjustable light source. This allows you to adjust the light beam to the shape and position of the object. This is useful for a tree with a tall trunk or a façade where you want to highlight a specific section.

Using ground spotlights to illuminate a tree

A ground spotlight positioned near a tree ensures that the trunk and crown remain visible in the evening. By directing the light upwards from the ground, you emphasise the height and natural structure of the tree.

Start with one ground spotlight for a small tree. For a larger tree, two or three light points may be needed to illuminate different sides of the trunk and crown.

Uplights along a façade or driveway

Uplights also work well along a façade or driveway. For example, use them to emphasise the texture of a wall or illuminate specific features of your home. This gives the outdoor space greater depth.

Use ground spotlights along a driveway to make the edges or surrounding plants more visible. When installing lights in a driveway, always check whether the selected fixture is suitable for the load at that location. Not every ground spotlight is designed to be driven over.

How do you install outdoor ground spotlights?

Lightpro ground spotlights work with the 12-volt garden lighting system. Therefore, use a transformer that converts 230 volts to 12 volts. Connect the fixtures to the system using the main cable and the required connection accessories.

A suitable base is important. Ensure sufficient drainage and prevent water from remaining around the fixture for prolonged periods. Also consider the required installation depth and the position of the cables.
